Assessment Task
Design a proposal for the native school garden, taking into account the abiotic (non-living) features of the Auburn area and the ways your chosen flora and fauna will interact. You will need to present this assessment in two sections:
Part One: a taxonomic report and garden design which includes:
Part Two: a persuasive speech and presentation which explains why your design should win - ie. a 2-3 minute speech accompanied by a visual aid. This could be:

This assessment task may be completed individually or in groups of 2-4, and each class will select two finalists to present their proposals to a panel of judges, completing for a $100 prize. The winner's proposal will become the basis for our new school garden. If you have completed this assessment task in a group (2-4 students), you will also need to complete a team assessment which outlines the contributions of each member and identifies group skills which you achieved well and areas for improvement.
Part One: a taxonomic report and garden design which includes:
- an introduction which outlines the main features of your proposal
- a scale drawing of your proposed garden
- A taxonomic table of the plants and animals you expect to live in your new ecosystem
- A food web of the plants and animals you expect to live in your ecosystem
- A taxonomic report of the abiotic and biotic ecological interactions that will be provided in your new ecosystem
- A bibliography showing you have used many different types of information sources
Part Two: a persuasive speech and presentation which explains why your design should win - ie. a 2-3 minute speech accompanied by a visual aid. This could be:
- a powerpoint presentation
- a video presentation
- a website
Your speech needs to make the audience believe that your garden design is the best possible choice. It must include:
- the plants you chose (and why you chose them)
- the animals they will attract (and ecosystem that will develop)
- any educational opportunities that will arise from the design
- building costs and how they influenced your design
