Backyard Ecology

ABiotic AND Biotic features of an ecosystem

The word "ecology” comes from two Greek words:
  • OIKOS = household
  • LOGOS = study of
so ecology is the study of the living and non-living parts of the “house/environment” in which we live.

The ecosystem in which we live consists of living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) parts. These parts are interdependent - ie.the living plants and animals depend on each other for energy and on the non-living environment for their homes. The plants and animals (including humans) can also change

  • seaweed
  • organisms living in the soil
  • grasses
  • fungi
  • coral
